Saint-Florent closes the Cap Corse loop on the west side. The Genoese founded it in the 15th century and built the round citadel that still overlooks the harbour; later it was fought over by the French, Paoli’s Corsicans and Nelson’s navy, then left to doze until yachts rediscovered it. Today it is a lively, good-looking resort that likes to be compared with Saint-Tropez, with a marina of several hundred berths, a waterfront of restaurants and a small old quarter of tall, narrow houses.
For visitors to the cape it has three roles: the most comfortable base on the west side, the place where boats leave for the beaches of the Agriates, and the gateway to the vineyards of Patrimonio. The surrounding district is the Nebbio (Nebbiu), an amphitheatre of hills and villages facing the gulf.
Top things to do: Saint-Florent
Walk the port and the old town
Start on the Place des Portes, where locals play boules under the plane trees, then wander through the lanes to the church and out along the quays. The short climb to the citadel gives a view over the roofs, the marina and the whole gulf; the building is sometimes open for exhibitions.
Visit the cathedral of the Nebbio
About a kilometre inland stands Santa Maria Assunta, a beautifully proportioned 12th-century Pisan Romanesque church in honey-coloured limestone that was the cathedral of the Nebbio bishops. Carved animals and spirals decorate the capitals. Inside, a glass case holds the relics of Saint Flor, a Roman soldier martyr. If the door is locked, ask at the tourist office about access.
Take a boat to the Agriates
Shuttle boats leave the harbour several times a day in season for Lotu beach, a crossing of around half an hour, and longer cruises combine the Agriates with the cliffs of Cap Corse. It is the reason many people come. See Saleccia & Lotu and our boat trips page.
Swim at La Roya
The town beach, a long strip of sand round the bay to the west, is a ten-minute walk from the port. The water is shallow and calm, good for children, with water-sports hire in summer.
Try something active
Sea kayaking along the Agriates shore, tandem paragliding above the gulf and 4x4 trips across the desert all start in or near Saint-Florent.

Insider tips
- Book boat seats for the Agriates a day or more ahead in July and August, and choose a morning departure — the wind often rises in the afternoon and crossings can be cancelled.
- Saint-Florent is one of the few places near the cape with several cash machines, supermarkets and pharmacies.
- Evenings are the best time in town: the port fills up, shops stay open late and the citadel is lit.
